Cathodoluminescence Microscopy and Spectroscopy of Shocked Zircon from the Vredefort Imapct

چکیده
Introduction: Zircon is a highly refractory and weathering-resistant mineral that has proven useful as an indicator of shock metamorphism in the study of impact structures and formations (e.g., [1-6]). Zircon has advantages compared to quartz or other shockmetamorphosed rock-forming minerals that have been widely used as impact indicators, but are far less refractory than zircon. The purpose of this investigation is to further investigate the capability of the SEM-CL technique to document shock deformation and to determine whether specific CL effects in zircon can be utilized to determine particular shock pressure stages.

U-Pb COMPOSITION AND SHOCK MICROSTRUCTURES OF IN-SITU ACCESSORY PHASES ACROSS THE VREDEFORT IMPACT STRUCTURE, SOUTH AFRICA: A TERRESTRIAL ANALOGUE FOR DATING THE LUNAR SURFACE AND OTHER PLANETARY BODIES
Introduction: Highly refractory micro-minerals such as zircon, monazite and baddeleyite can survive and record intense shock metamorphism, and occasionally recrystallize to date impact events. Their microscale records have the potential to be used to deduce the timing and magnitude of large impacts in ex-situ solar system samples (i.e. meteorites, crystal clasts in breccias) provided we have a ...

Introduction: In this work, we report on the results of a combined scanning electron microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy investigation of stishovite and coesite in shocked Hospital Hill quartzite from the Vredefort impact structure of South Africa. Sanples have investigated using optical microscopy and under the scanning electron microscope, using energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS),...
متن کاملInfrared and Raman spectra of ZrSiO4 experimentally shocked at high pressures
Zirconand reidite-type ZrSiO4 produced by shock recovery experiments at different pressures have been studied using infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy. The n3 vibration of the SiO4 group in shocked natural zircon shows a spectral change similar to that seen in radiation-damaged zircon: a decrease in frequency and increase in linewidth. The observation could imply a possible similar defective ...
متن کاملZircon Metamictisation study by Cathodoluminescence and X-ray Imaging
Zircon (ZrSiO4) exhibits an extraordinary memory. Its stability, durability, low solubility and low elemental diffusivities combine to preserve in it a record of most of the important events that have affected it, its host rocks, and the crust of which it is a part. The zonation in zircon grains delineate the boundaries of discrete geochemical processes that occurred at different times. Zircon ...
